It’s time to meet Julian! Tell us a little about yourself….
Hi guys.
I’m Julian Willmott and I’ve worked in the yachting industry for more than 40 years.
I graduated from Mayfield College in the late seventies and, being a ‘hands on guy’, got a job working in the precision Glass Reinforced Plastic (GRP) moulding industry.
That job taught me two things. Firstly, I had a natural ability in this demanding industry, and, secondly, I loved it!
Having gained a sound grounding in GRP, I spent the next decade living and working in Iceland where I ran a marine sector company before coming back to the UK in the early nineties to start my own business.
I founded GRP Boat Repairs in 1992, and since then I’ve been involved in hundreds of boat repairs, refits and refurbishments all over the world – as far afield as the Falkland Islands.
My company motto was, and still is: ‘you will never see one of our repairs.’
There was another sea change for me in 1997, which saw the birth of a sister company for GRP Boat Repairs, called Wahoo Ribs. This designs and builds luxury rigid inflatable tenders specifically for superyachts. These aren’t your standard ‘RIBS’ – they’re built to the highest standards of workmanship and utility, with luxury that wouldn’t normally be associated with yacht tenders! Wahoo builds SOLAS RIBS, too, which are a specially designed for Safety of Life at Sea.
When you are immersed in the yachting industry, as I am, doing an excellent job is second nature. My skilled team and I undertake every project with the time and care it deserves. Boat owners have love affairs with their craft and an excellent job is not good enough: each one has to be perfect!
As winter approaches, we spend a little less time sailing and a lot more time thinking about end of year festivities. Now is the right time to get your yacht looking as good as new for 2019.
Tim and I will be heading to various places across Europe – including France and Palma, Majorca – over the next couple of weeks, before heading to the Antigua Yacht Show in December, for the final big yachting event of the year.
